APRIL WINE to tour North America, as special guest to reunited TRIUMPH

This past year was a busy year for APRIL WINE, having toured the UK with Uriah Heep and Tyketto, then Canada with BTO and the Headpins, and then over to Europe to (again) join Uriah Heep and Heavy Pettin’. And 2026 looks like they’ll be on another bigger tour, supporting Triumph! Check out the press release, tour dates, and links below!

Fans of classic Canadian rock n’ roll must be overjoyed with not only the announcement of Triumph’s first North American tour in decades, but that they will have another one of the Great White North’s top rock bands supporting these spring dates: April Wine.  Running from April 22nd through June 6th, the tour will hit all the spots that both Triumph and April Wine amassed legions of fans over the years; Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary, St. Louis, San Antonio, New York, etc.

*Tickets are now on sale for all the shows, and can be ordered via this link:  https://www.livenation.com/artist/K8vZ917CqB0/triumph-events

Comprised of members Brian Greenway (guitar), Richard Lanthier (bass), Roy Nichol (drums), and Marc Parent (lead vocals, guitar), this will not be the first time April Wine and Triumph have shared the stage before. Longtime fans may recall a show at the Municipal Auditorium in San Antonio, Texas on February 18, 1977, which served as Triumph’s major American debut and a significant breakthrough for the band.  Also, in San Antonio during March 1978, as part of a run of five shows in Texas for promoter JAM Productions. One fan recalled the lineup for this show as April Wine, Crack the Sky, and headliner Triumph. Both bands have a strong history with the state, as San Antonio radio station KISS-FM was an early supporter of Canadian hard rock acts, helping both bands gain a significant U.S. following.

April Wine has been a staple in the rock music scene for over five decades. Known for their powerful ballads and rock anthems, the band has seen several lineup changes but has always stayed true to their roots. April Wine has weathered the storms of the music industry with remarkable resilience and the band continues to captivate audiences with their electrifying performances. Fans are eagerly awaiting the next show, ready to experience the magic that April Wine delivers.

The journey began in 1969, marking the start of a legendary career in rock music. With hits like “Just Between You and Me”, “Sign of the Gypsy Queen”, “Roller”, “I Like To Rock”, “Say Hello”, “Oowatanite”, “Enough Is Enough”, “Rock N Roll Is A Vicious Game” and many more, April Wine has left an indelible mark on the music industry.

Significant milestones include their induction into the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame in 2009, the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2010 and Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2023. These accolades are a reflection of their hard work, talent, and the significant role they have played in shaping the rock genre. April Wine’s ability to consistently deliver powerful performances and connect with audiences has earned them a place among the greats in rock history.

Today, the band continues to tour, keeping the spirit of rock alive for their dedicated fanbase. And in 2026, they will bring their melodic and anthemic brand of rock once more to North America!

The Story Behind The Album Covers: An interview with Mark Kowalchuk on WOODHAWK

Canadian artist Mark Kowalchuk has created the 3 album covers for Canuck stoner-rock band WOODHAWK, from Calgary. The latest design from Mark is the brand new Woodhawk album Love Fins A Way. All 3 Woodhawk covers are eye catching and creative, and each has a story to them. I recently swapped questions and answers with Mark regarding these album covers, as well as what else he is up to creatively in the rock music field. Check it out below, along with images of Mark’s work, and check out the new Woodhawk album!

As an artist, what is your ‘field’? Who do you design for—concertgoers, advertising, album covers, or other media?

Most of the work I do is for the skateboard and snowboard world. I only create art for a few select bands: Metallica, In Flames, Souls of Mischief, and Woodhawk. Most of what I do for these bands is merchandise design. I create album art for Woodhawk, but generally, people hire me for apparel design, as that’s where I’m most experienced.

You’ve done the three Woodhawk album covers. How did you get involved with them? What’s the connection?

Working with Woodhawk happened quite organically, actually. I was doing artwork for another friend’s band at the time Chron Goblin (I used to skateboard with those guys a lot back then) and I met the Woodhawk guys at a show where they played alongside Chron Goblin. They liked the work I had done for Chron Goblin and asked me to do a few designs for them, which eventually led to a lot more collaboration.

Each of the Woodhawk covers suits the title well. Can you share the idea or story behind each of them? Did the band members contribute input or suggestions?

For Beyond the Sun, we went with the concept of an astronaut who’s been forgotten on a planet far from Earth. My personal interpretation is that he’s ventured too far, and that ends up being his demise.

Violent Nature is full of symbolism. There’s a lot of yin and yang imagery, the tree is fruitful on one side and decaying on the other.

For Love Finds a Way, the main character is lost in a strange land he doesn’t recognize and is trying to find his way. He’s being watched by a ominous creature larger than him, though that part is left open to the viewer’s interpretation.

The band has a lot of input into their look and designs. We usually meet up over some tasty wings and beers and talk about what the album is about and the direction they want to go in. Each album has a different mood, and they’re good at providing me with examples and mood boards to convey the vibe they’re after. They trust me to bring something extra to the artwork and allow me to incorporate my own interpretation as well.

For example, they wanted the wanderer on Love Finds a Way to be holding a lantern. I felt the lantern had strong symbolic weight, so I focused on emphasizing that element. One thing I will say is that we work well together in blending their ideas with mine.

I presume you hear some of the music before each album is finished? Does that influence what you create?

Absolutely. It’s essential for me to hear the music, it’s mandatory to create the proper visuals.

Are any of the landscapes based on real places or perhaps photos you’ve come across, or are they purely imagination?
All of them come fully from my imagination, they’re not based on real places. For Beyond the Sun, I imagined he might be on Mars since the album has a red theme, but I didn’t look at any actual Martian landscapes or reference photos. It was all from my head.

What’s your method for creating artwork? (Drawing, painting, digital, etc.) Can you walk us through the process of designing Love Finds a Way?
I’ve got my process dialed in,kind of like baking a cake, really. First, I sketch out 3 to 5 rough concepts in my sketchbook. Then I usually meet up with the guys (over delicious beer and wings, which I mentioned early). They give me feedback, and I take notes to move into a second round of sketches.

Once we settle on a final concept, I do the clean inking. I scan the linework and color it digitally. I always keep the original ink work as-is—I don’t redraw it digitally because I think it keeps that personal, hand-drawn feel intact.

Are you doing any other pieces for the latest Woodhawk release—posters, singles, shirt designs?
I just finished a few new merch designs for them, which you’ll be seeing shortly. The guys usually call me as they need me, so your guess is as good as mine. The magic eight ball says: “Chances are good.”

Who are some of your favorite album artists or covers (besides your own)?
I’ve always loved the work of Alex Pardee, his art for A Sense of Purpose by In Flames is awesome. I’m also a big fan of some of Mastodon’s covers, especially Cold Dark Place, and my friend Skinner did Once More ‘Round the Sun, which is killer. Tool’s album art has been a huge part of my upbringing as well.

Do you have any favorite songs from the latest Woodhawk album?
My top pick is White Crosses, with Killing Time coming in second, and I’ll explain why.
The lyrics in White Crosses about going to hell alone really resonated with me at the time. I was going through a dark period in my life, and it felt like the song was mirroring exactly what I was experiencing. From my perspective, it might be the darkest song Woodhawk has ever written.

Killing Time is also powerful, what a way to close the album. It feels like slamming the door behind you as you walk out. There’s a real sense of pain and loneliness in that track. Art evokes emotion, and that one nailed it for me.

Have you worked on any other album covers besides the ones for Woodhawk?
Yes, I’ve done two projects for In Flames in the past. I did the single artwork for Ropes and the fold-out cassette design for Clayman 2020.

Where can people find more of your artwork, album covers, or prints?
I’ve been too busy with projects lately to focus on prints or a dedicated website, but you can see all my artwork on my Instagram: @mark_kowalchuk

LOVERBOY to release 1982 live show on CD & DVD

Loverboy to launch previously unreleased live show in fully restored and remixed sound & vision through earMUSIC.

The story of Loverboy is akin to a Hollywood movie. Overcoming rejection to eventually become one of Canada’s most successful rock bands of all time and selling millions of albums in the process, is a feel-good story for the ages.

“Live In ‘82” has been lovingly restored by Paul Dean from his personal archive of 16mm film, the joyous energy of a band who helped define the golden era of 80’s music captured like lightning in a bottle. With their great music, colorful clothing, outrageous hairstyles (and headbands!), and terrific soundtracks for movies like ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’, and ‘Top Gun’, Loverboy has stood the test of time.

“Live In ‘82” will become available on limited CD+Blu-ray, limited LP+DVD and digital streaming and download on June 7th. Today’s announcement coincides with the launch of the first live track: ‘Turn Me Loose’ is available as digital single and live video.

Listen to the single HERE

For more than 40 years, Loverboy has been “Working For The Weekend” (and on the weekend), delighting audiences around the world since forming in 1979, when vocalist Mike Reno was introduced to guitar hot shot Paul Dean – both veterans of several bands on the Canadian scene – at Calgary’s Refinery Night Club. Along with Reno and Dean, Loverboy still includes original members Doug Johnson on keyboards and Matt Frenette on drums, with Ken “Spider” Sinnaeve replacing the late Scott Smith on bass.

With their trademark red leather pants, bandannas, big rock sound and high-energy live showsthe band has sold more than 10 million albums, earning several multi-platinum awards. Their string of hits includes, in addition to the anthem ‘Working For The Weekend’, such arena rock staples as ‘The Kid Is Hot Tonight’, ‘Take Me To The Top’, ‘Turn Me Loose’, ‘Jump’ and many more. Loverboy are not only masters of their craft as songwriters, but also renowned for being a formidable touring act, spending years on the road sharing stages with everyone from Def Leppard to Journey.

In 2009, the group was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, and more recently the Canadian Walk of Fame, in the fall of 2023.

And there is no stopping the band this year, as they embark on a Live Nation promoted North American tour supporting Sammy Hagar, starting in July.

Tickets for all concerts are available from TheGigcartel.com

“This is the first song from the sessions for our forthcoming studio album that we are recording with our producer Bob Rock (Aerosmith, Metallica, Motley Crue) at Bryan Adam’s recording studio ‘The Warehouse’ in Vancouver,” says TDT’s lead singer Lee-La Baum.

Continues Lee-la, “Working with Bob a second time was even more inspiring than the first. I don’t know exactly what comes over me, but when I’m in the vocal booth singing into Frank Sinatra’s mic, knowing that Bob is in the other room, basically hanging on my every breath, I am able to let go and try all sorts of things that weren’t ever in my mind before. It’s really freaking fun!”

Adds lead guitarist Tom Shemer, “The whole thing started with a riff and I knew immediately that I had something cool here. I showed the riff to Lee-la and she came up with the melody and lyrics for the verses right there on the spot.”

“We had the song banging on high energy from beginning to end, very much in the spirit of The Kinks, and once the train was rolling, there was no stopping it.”

“Bob said ‘forget everything you know about guitar playing and just go for it.’ I only played one take of the solo. He was right!”

In 2021, TDT released the critically acclaimed album “Now or Nowhere.” Produced by Grammy Award-winning Bob Rock, the album is available from www.thedamntruth.com.

CATEGORY VI – Canadian metal band releases third album Firecry

Canada’s CATEGORY VI are releasing their 3rd album Firecry this week. For those who like heavy metal produced with big sounding guitars up front , solid production, powerful vocals, melodies, and songs that are lyrically and musically interesting – think Judas Priest, Saxon, Dio, and some NWOBHM influences. Best tracks include “Valkyrie”, “Heavy Is The Crown”, “The Cradle Will Fall”, and the title track . There’s also a lively version of Heart’s classic “Barracuda” to end this 9 track set, which rocks aggressively full-on from beginning to end, with only a few brief intros that let up on the gas. Aside from the band’s official videos (below), also check out the band’s track by track promo videos, hosted by singer Amanda Jackman. Cool cover art by Ivan Radnic

*For more info, check out the press release, bio, and links below!

“Firecry” is their third album and most accomplished release to date “Firecry”. From the initial flickering flame of “Firecry” to the final cinders of the absolutely combustible cover of HEART’s classic “Barracuda”, CATEGORY VI delivers true and classic 80’s heavy metal with utter perfection. “Firecry” boasts a crisp, clear, and scorching modern production that does not distract from the band’s true 80’s metal sound.

Lyrically crafted around themes of personal pride and triumph (Valkyrie, Heavy is the Crown), witchcraft persecution (Firecry), women’s strength (She Runs With Wolves) & their excellent live performances (Coven), these concepts are boldly and powerfully delivered by the soaring vocal excellence of Amanda Jackman. Bolstered and fueled by the powerful stainless steel riffs and catchy melodies of guitarist Geoff Waye, the pounding anvil bass of Keith Jackman, and the thunderous steadfast drumming of Brian Downton, CATEGORY VI brings classy and classic 1980s power – Traditional Heavy Metal into the 21st century with blazing glory.

Band Bio:

Hailing from the misty shores of the northeast Avalon, Category VI formed in early 2010. The band brings something new to the local Newfoundland metal scene as they are the only female-fronted melodic metal band in the province! Category VI has performed live in St. John’s actively since 2010 with other local hard rock and metal bands as well as with touring bands Including NAIL and ANVIL and to date has released two full-length albums.

The band self-released their first full album “Fireborn“ in January 2014. The album received plenty of praise and great reviews on both the local and international levels. Two music videos (“Reborn“ and “Silence befalls the crowd“) were produced for the album. “Silence befalls the crowd“ has been released 4/28/2017 on the DVD “Kill For Metal Vol. I“, a compilation of videos of label-mates on the KILLER METAL RECORDS label. The band has performed regularly for over 7 years at many venues.

Not long after the release of “Fireborn“, CATEGORY VI signed to Killer Metal Records. The band spent most of 2015 writing and perfecting material for their second album “War is Hell”. Recordings for the album took place throughout 2016 and wrapped up in June 2016 at Redhouse Recording in St. John’s, NL. Album mixing was done in the summer/fall of 2016 and mastering was completed in early January 2017 by Lacquer Channel Mastering in Toronto, Ontario. “War is hell” has been released globally as of June 9, 2017. The album was nominated for hard album of the year for Music NL and was favourably reviewed by several press outlets.

The band played several shows in 2017-2018 until pausing to write the 3rd album. Then, without a permanent drummer, and with the pandemic, the band was in hibernation. The band has now emerged from the shadows with a new drummer and with the third album FIRECRY ready to be released in 2023 via Moribund Records.

SPELL to release new album Tragic Magic

Hypnotic Heavy Metal Band, SPELL, to Release New LP, ‘Tragic Magic’, October 28!
Vancouver Progressive Duo Drops Video for New Song “Ultraviolet”

Fantastical heavy metal band Spell will release it’s new LP, Tragic Magic, on October 28 via Bad Omen Records. Featuring ten tracks of prime, progressive heavy music flooded with mesmerizing atmospheres, Tragic Magic sees Spell take a decidedly grittier lyrical approach, leaning less into escapism, while confronting real life challenges of modern times. Striking use of art by Władysław Podkowiński for the cover.  Pre-order ‘Tragic Magic’ at THIS location.

A first taste of what Tragic Magic holds in store can be ingested now as Spell unveils a video for the LP’s radiating first single “Ultraviolet”. Created by Sean Edwards for Ramble Films (Freeways), the eye-catching clip showcases Spell at the height of its powers. Stream Spell’s “Ultraviolet” video HERE

“Ultraviolet” explores the hidden terror of forces that rule us but cannot be perceived or understood, says Spell vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Cam Mesmer. “Our world is shaped by powers that the limitations of our physical bodies prevent us from directly encountering. Will we fall victim to the lust for that which cannot be ours, or harness them to fulfil our wildest dreams?”

Tragic Magic is the highly-anticipated follow up to Spell’s critically-acclaimed 2020 LP, Opulent Decay, a record hailed as “fantasy rock” by Blabbermouth, “enchanting” by Heavy Blog is Heavy, and “a captivating mix of Rush- and Blue Öyster Cult” by Revolver.

Tragic Magic  was written and recorded entirely as a collaboration between brothers Cam and Al (Lester); the record’s songcraft is steeped in the atmosphere of the arcane, yet the hooks are more razor-sharp than ever. While influences like the esoteric charge of the aforementioned Blue Öyster Cult and the elemental expansions of Camel and King Crimson drift through these crepuscular melodies, Spell are as likely to be influenced by the life-affirming energy of ‘60s Motown, the ethereal dimensions of Cocteau Twins, the strident woe of Candlemass, and the classic songwriting chops of Russ Ballard.

“The themes on this album are more concrete, guided by personal experience,” offers Mesmer. “Tragic Magic’ has to do with mental illness, ageing, the death of a loved one, the decay of time… this is what ‘tragic magic’ means to us – loss and tragedy outside of our control, which fundamentally alters our perceived reality. This album is our response to the world as it currently is: music for an ascetic age.”

“And we couldn’t be happier about the result,” Mesmer continues. “The identity of Spell came into sharp focus as it was always intended to be. Music is magic, and Spell is a spell. Fundamentally, it is a forum to make our dreams come true”

   Track listing:

   1.) Fatal Breath
   2.) Ultraviolet
   3.) Hades Embrace
   4.) Fever Dream
   5.) Sarcophagus
   6.) Cruel Optimism
   7.) A Ruined Garden
   8.) Souls in Chains
