MAGNUM – announce new album, tour dates

MAGNUM have announced a new album, ‘Here Comes the Rain’, to be released January 12, 2024. There will be a new single & (lyric) video out on November 22! A European & UK tour will follow starting in April. *Check out the press info & tour dates below.

Pre-Order ‘Here Comes The Rain’ –  HERE

There are few great bands on our planet that can be infallibly identified within the first few bars of one of their songs. With unique melodic skill, tasteful instrumentation, an amazing balance of depth and catchiness, and, of course, that charismatic voice: MAGNUM are Magnum!

The same can be said of their latest studio album ‘Here Comes The Rain’, which will be out on Steamhammer/SPV January 12th, 2024 on CD + DVD, double vinyl LP, as a box set and for digital download, proving once again that classic rock music could hardly sound more atmospheric. The band surrounding frontman Bob Catley and guitarist/songwriter Tony Clarkin is set to release two lead singles – “Blue Tango” on November 22, 2023 and “The Seventh Darkness” on January 3, 2024. Additionally, a tour has been scheduled to kick off in early April 2024.

The album’s highly inspired artwork is once more designed by the great Rodney Matthews, who has already created a number of MAGNUM sleeves to support the band’s atmospherically dense music. Says Tony Clarkin: “The back cover features a kind of avian battalion in attack mode, which I think is a great allegory!”

Apart from MAGNUM’s typical trademarks, ‘Here Comes The Rain’ also holds a number of thoroughly pleasant surprises. First single, “Blue Tango”, is a real riff-rock number that makes you want to move your feet while “The Seventh Darkness”, is filled with awesome brass sections courtesy of guest musicians Chris ‘BeeBe’ Aldridge (saxophone) and Nick Dewhurst (trumpet), which lend the song brilliance and shape.

There is no doubt about it: ‘Here Comes The Rain’ sees the MAGNUM line-up consisting of Catley, Clarkin, keyboardist Rick Benton, bassist Dennis Ward and drummer Lee Morris, once again succeed in creating an outstanding, colorful, varied and inspired new studio album. “Everyone played their part without me dictating anything,” Clarkin enthuses, “everyone just instinctively played what their inspiration told them.” It’s a good thing that these superb musicians can rely on their intuition!

‘Here Comes the Rain’ Track List:
1. Run into the Shadows 2. Here Comes the Rain 3. Some Kind of Treachery 4. After the Silence 5. Blue Tango 6. The Day He Lied 7. The Seventh Darkness 8. Broken City 9. I Wanna Live 10. Borderline

Here Comes The Rain’ will be released on January 12th, 2024 through SPV/Steamhammer in the following configurations: > CD+DVD (‘Live At KK’s Steel Mill’) DigiPak > CD Jewel Case Version > Limited Box Set > 2LP Gatefold, 140 g, solid baby blue vinyl, printed inner sleeves > Download / Streaming  > Exclusive CD/LP Bundles with a shirt only at the Steamhammer shop HERE > 2LP Gatefold exclusive colored edition only at the Napalm shop HERE

Steve Hackett’s timeless guitar-work was woven throughout Genesis’ classic 70’s catalogue of albums. In recent years he and his outstanding touring line-up of Roger King (keyboards), Nad Sylvan (vocals), Jonas Reingold (bass, backing vocals), Rob Townsend (saxophone, flutes, additional keyboards) and Craig Blundell (drums) have brought many of these albums back to the concert hall to great acclaim. What better way to celebrate half-a-century of this remarkable album than to include a selection of Lamb Highlights alongside some of Hackett’s finest solo work and unmissable Genesis Greats.

TREVOR RABIN – Rio (new album)

Former YES guitarist/songwriter Trevor Rabin has a new album out soon. Rabin, who was largely responsible for much of YES’ 1983 comeback album 90125, and the hits “Owner Of A Lonely Heart” , and 1987’s “Love Will Find A Way”. Rio features 10 tracks (LP), and a 2-disc version with 3 more. The first 2 singles can be heard below, and the album includes a wide variety of songs, guitar sounds, synths, and harmony arrangements . Lots of other good and interesting tracks here, prog, pop, rock… Favorites include the ballad “Oklahoma”, and the fast paced country flavored pop of “Goodbye”. I am not familiar with much of Rabin’s previous solo work, but I am quite certain that anyone that enjoyed the albums he made with YES (as I did) with dig this. Check out the 2 videos, as well as the links below.

Trevor Rabin, the South African guitarist, singer, multi-musician, writer and producer, releases ‘Rio’, his first solo album of vocal material in 34 years on October 6, via InsideOut Music.

Although he has carved a lengthy and diverse career, Johannesburg-born Rabin is best known for membership of the band Yes over a 12-year, four-album spell that began in 1983, his smash hit song ‘Owner Of A Lonely Heart’ of the same year topping America’s Billboard chart and inspiring the iconic prog-rock band to cross over into a far larger audience. Rabin was inducted to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame with the band in 2017 and more recently teamed up with former Yes members Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman in the trio ARW.

ELOY – legendary German progressive band release new video and album

Legendary German prog band ELOY has a new album out – Echoes From The Past. The band, from Hanover, formed in 1969 and is lead by founder/guitarist/vocalist/songwriter & producer Frank Bornemann. Also on board is bass player Klaus-Peter Matziol, who joined Eloy in the mid-’70s, drummer Stephan Emig (who played on the previous album), as well a number of backing singers, and keyboard players – most notably Steve Mann (MSG, Sweet), who’s been on a number of Eloy albums since the mid ’90s. Echoes From The Past is Eloy’s 20th studio album and is a follow up to the band’s previous 2 releases – The Vision, The Sword, and The Pyre (Parts 1 & 2), which are based on the same story (see below).

The new album’s stunning artwork was once again created by Michael Narten, who has done many covers for Eloy, as well as Scorpions and Trumvirat, Eloy has also released a single/video for the song “Fate” (check it out below). Echoes From The Past comes in multiple formats and multiple colored vinyl issues.

Eloy’s debut album was released in 1971, produced by the legendary Conny Plank. Eloy (the album), was a harder guitar driven album, more in tune with the likes of Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, and Lucifer’s Friend. But the band would turn towards a much more progressive sound and approach, ala Pink Floyd, releasing such classic albums as Dawn (1976), Ocean (1977), and Silent Cries And Mighty Echoes (1979). The latter could be easily mistaken for a lost Pink Floyd album upon first hearing. During this era Eloy also featured former Scorpions’ drummer Jurgen Rosenthal, and keyboard player Detlev Schmidtchen (who would go on to release a pile of solo albums in the 2000s). Eloy’s ’70s output is some of the most essential progressive rock out there, though harder to come by over here as very few of these albums got issued in North America.

From press release: “The album is the conclusion of a three-part album production on the theme of “Joan of Arc”, and a very spectacular video is also presented for the title “FATE”, which illustrates the whole story of the French heroine from the Middle Ages, who was crowned a saint, in an astonishing 3 minutes with rhythmic force and a rolling beat, as well as a tremendous choral refrain. After the first two albums entitled “The Vision, The Sword & The Pyre (Part 1 & 2)” already brought great success, as well as reaching high chart quotations, “Echoes from the Past” could even surpass this, because on this album the band sounds even more the way their worldwide fan community likes them most. The typical Eloy spirit of sensitive, atmospheric sound waves alternating with powerful, pulsating rhythms rules this album, literally jumping at the listener with every note.

YES release new single from Mirror To The Sky

YES are set to release their new studio album Mirror To The Sky on InsideOutMusic/Sony Music on the May 19th. “This is a very important album for the band,” says Steve Howe, Yes’ longest serving member, master guitarist, and producer of Mirror To The Sky. “We kept the continuity in the approach we established on The Quest, but we haven’t repeated ourselves. That was the main thing. As Yes did in the seventies from one album to another, we’re growing and moving forward. In later years, Yes often got going but then didn’t do the next thing. This album is demonstrative of us growing, and building again.”  For Yes, that “next thing” is a collection of high energy, intricate, lush and layered new studio songs for an album which adds to the band’s much heralded legacy, while charting a path to exciting future times ahead.

Jon Davison comments: “I, along with my Yes band mates are excited to announce that the second single from our new album, Mirror to the Sky is out now. It’s entitled, ‘All Connected’, and it’s a longer piece, clocking in at a challenging 9 minutes. Steve added a beautifully poignant instrumental steel part which starts the journey. This section emotionally builds and crescendos into a glorious lead way for the vocals to begin telling their story. Billy composed complex and compelling musical themes which I helped to arrange, and we both composed vocals and lyrics, each of us singing our respective parts, making for a rich vocal tapestry.”

Billy Sherwood adds: “The initial idea came from a musical sketch I’d created using the idea of our “connectivity” in regards to communications in the modern age. It’s very exciting to know YES are maintaining that edge and energy we all know and love, this track is firing on all cylinders. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did creating it.”

Mirror To The Sky will be available on several formats, all featuring artwork by long-time Yes artist & collaborator Roger Dean:

Album of the Day – DAVID GILMOUR’s Rattle That Lock

Like Pink Floyd albums, David Gilmour solo releases seem few and far between, thus become events to listeners and fans. And with such a wait, expectations are high. So, 2015’s Rattle That Lock was an eventful one for David Gilmour fans – a new studio album, followed by a world tour. Rattle That Lock being Gilmour’s 4th solo (studio) album since 1978, and followed the 2014 Pink Floyd album Endless River. From the packaging alone, one can sense something special in holding Gilmour’s latter releases – beautiful cover art, gatefold, a 16 page booklet insert.

And then the music, starting off with the built up instrumental / overture “5A.M.”, and there is something about Gilmour’s guitar sound & feel that make this sort of stuff so appealing that I want to play it repeatedly. The title track is one of a few upbeat songs here, it is memorable, a fine choice for a single, with nice harmonies, the other more upbeat tune being the album’s other single – “Today”. Rattle That Lock is largely slower tempo, atmospheric music, but with a good deal of changes. It all flows together so perfectly through Gilmour’s guitar sound, voice, and top production. Favorites cuts have to be “Faces Of Stone”, “Dancing Right In Front Of Me”, and “In Any Tongue”, where Gilmour lays out his ‘heaviest’ and most memorable solo. There’s some different stuff here, such as the slow paced jazzy “The Girl In The Yellow Dress”, featuring cornet and saxophone.

Plenty of guests, plus the use of orchestra and choirs on a various tracks. Guests include Phil Manzanera (Roxy Music), Andy Newmark (Sly & The Familiar Stone), Jools Holland (Squeeze), British jazz bass player Yaron Stavi, among others. David Crosby (RIP) and Graham Nash add harmonies on “A Boat Lies Waiting”, and pre-recording-days Pink Floyd guitarist Rado Klose (I never knew). The journey of Rattle That Lock ends with a revisit of the opening theme on “And Then…” The ensuing tour would give us the Live At Pompeii release in 2017.

Album of the Day: GENESIS’ Foxtrot

Well, as Steve Hackett is going out on tour to play Foxtrot to celebrate the album’s 50th anniversary, I pulled this out. My favorite Genesis album, the band’s fourth, and 2nd to feature the classic line-up of Peter Gabriel (vocals), Steve Hackett (guitars), Tony Banks (keyboards), Mike Rutherford (bass), and Phil Collins (drums). Released in October of 1972, Foxtrot was a #1 album in Italy and Top 20 in France and the UK. It starts off with one of the most recognizable mellotron intros to the classic “Watcher Of The Skies” . The song is majestic, with changes, theatrics, and superb production; the best song of the era IMO. But, Foxtrot is full of classics like “Time Table”, the acoustic based gem “Can-Utility And The Coastliners”, the epic “Get ‘Em Out By Friday”, and the band’s 23+ minute masterpiece “Supper’s Ready”. There is so much going on on Foxtrot, it just has more to discover every time. Foxtrot would be the last of 3 album coves for the band drawn by Paul Whitehead. One of the essential progressive rock albums to have.

NEW YORK-GENESIS: COMING OF AGE
Why do you suppose it is that American audiences seem to immediately respond to British groups? And why do you suppose it is that Great Britain has
consistently produced some of the very best and most talented musicians ever? One of the major factors attributed to the overwhelming success of the British invasion is dedication-pure and simple dedication. Another is originality. And that brings us to the beginning: Genesis. The nucleus of Genesis was formed back in 1966, and has, over the past six years, developed into a tightly knit unit of fine musicians/songwriters we have created a particular brand of what can be called narrative rock-though neither
‘narrative’ nor ‘rock’ best describes their musical genre. For Genesis lies in an- other musical realm.

‘watcher of the skies
watcher of all
His is a world alone no world is his own He whom life can no longer surprise
raising his eyes
beholds a planet unknown.’

At their best, Genesis is capable of weaving a tapestry of sound into a blanket
of intricate song, Tony Banks (mellotron and keyboards) knows exactly when to become an entire orchestra, and when to lay back and be felt rather than heard. One of the dangers of using a mellotron is that a group can be easily compared to the Moody Blues or to Yes-but Banks, too, is a master technician, and no comparison need be drawn. He has developed his own unique style of performing, which, in conjunction with the remainder of the band, has given him his own identity. The other members of Genesis, Steve Hackett, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel and Michael Rutherford, all contribute equally to the band’s overall sound. They play a variety of instruments and generate the necessary energy needed to comprise a total working unit. And when everyone contributes, everyone shares in the success.
Genesis has for long been a favorite British band. Their first two albums, “Trespass,” and “Nusery Crime” have already become best sellers abroad. Their third, “Foxtrot,” was a top 20 LP in England and has just been released in America on Charisma Records distributed by the Buddah Group. On December 13, Genesis will make their debut American performance at Philharmonic Hall, and those of us who truly appreciate progressive music will be there. – CashBox, 72-12-09

GENESIS – Foxtrot Charisma (Buddah) CAS 1058 – For some time a top name in England, Genesis should begin to make U.S. headway with this interesting set. Tony Banks stands out on organ, piano and mellotron, and Peter Gabriel is a fine vocalist. Highlights on side one include “Get ’em Out by Fri- day” and “Watcher of the Skies,” while side two is given the overall title of “Supper’s Ready” follows a basic story line. Strong cuts include “Lover’s Leap” and “Ikhaton and Itsacon and Their Band of Merry Men.” – Billboard, 72-12-09

Genesis To Debut At Philharmonic
NEW YORK – British rock group, Genesis, will make their first American appearance at Philharmonic Hall on Dec. 13, in a concert sponsored by radio station WNEW-FM and Charisma Records. The show, which will also feature Charisma artists String Driven Thing, is being produced by Dominic Sicilia. All tickets for the performance will be sold at $3.00, with the total receipts being donated to the cerebral palsy fund. Genesis’ latest album, “Foxtrot,” a top 20 LP in England, has just been released in America on the Charisma label, distributed by the Buddah Group. – CashBox, 72-12-02
