Story Behind the Album Cover – WINGS OF STEEL, with Spencer Caligiuri

California artist Spencer Caligiuri has created the artwork for Wings Of Steel’s debut EP as well as their fist full album Gates Of Twilight, released earlier this year. Both covers are fantastic and give the band a theme and cool logo from cover to cover. In this episode of Story Behind The Album Cover, Spencer Caligiuri details his art & early days, as well as a few of his favorite album covers, And his creating and work on the Wings Of Steel covers. WOS are fairly new hard-rock / metal band from LA, who will play big ’80s influenced rock, for fans of Whitesnake, Dokken, Michael Schenker Group, Great White, and numerous others. Check them out! For more on Spencer Caligiuri’s work, check out the links at the end, You can find a review and interview on Wings Of Steel elsewhere at this site.

What is your art background, and have you done any other album covers or artwork for bands?

Going back into the past, I’ve been an artist of some sort for as long as I can remember. I started by drawing of course. Doodling animals as a child, trying to copy exactly as they looked, encouraged by my mom, aunts and grandmother. My grandma was a landscape oil painter. I think seeing her paintings hanging around the house was something that made painting feel within reach, and not just something produced by the great masters. I continued this for all of childhood through highschool. I studied portrait and figure drawing late high school at a local art school before doing a brief, unsuccessful attempt at the Art Institute of CA for graphic/animation. This was stunted by my overwhelming urge to choose partying and drugs over getting serious about my future. But I got back on my feet, albeit taking me multiple years of falling on my face, and got very into writing and oil painting in 2009. I gravitated toward anything with water, and the weirder and more psychedelic the better. Painting was all I cared about until l found tattooing which is a long story in itself. But that is my life now. For the last 10 years I tattoo 5 days a week so most of my extracurricular artistic passions have taken a back seat.

I’ve done a few album covers. Buffalo Trance is an incredibly talented 3 piece progressive rock band from Ventura, CA.  I grew up with these guys and they’ve been killing their respective instruments since we were in early high school.  The other cover is a 36” X 36” physical oil painting I did for a San Diego reggae band called Burning Wave.

How did you get connected/involved with Wings Of Steel?

I started working with WOS through an email they sent me inquiring my help bringing their EP cover to life. I was instantly intrigued. these dudes knew exactly what they wanted and as soon as they sent me their demo I was fucking blown away. We instantly set up a meeting at the tattoo shop and we’re off and running. I really couldn’t believe two young musicians in their mid/early 20’s were writing music like this. The first track I heard was their self titled track “wings of steel.” As soon as I heard Parker’s guitar sound I knew I was in. if that wasn’t enough, Leo’s vocals and lyrics hit and I was instantly a fan, determined to be part of what they were channeling.

Can you tell me about the design for their new album — what inspired it, did anyone in the band offer ideas, etc..

Their new album “Gates of Twilight” was definitely riffing on the concept of the EP. the two stallions which would seem to be a recurring fixture of their image and representation of Leo and Parker. The dark and light, for sure present in their opposing dark and light hair. At least this is my interpretation. Leo and Parker both knew exactly what they wanted to see in this and were super clear on their thought process for it. I tried to bring what I had from the EP into this, yet incorporating the Gates of Twilight, represented by a towering staircase flanked by columns, and silhouetted by the heavens. I thought the standard wrought iron gate has been done so many times and might get lost in the background noise.  There’s Some darker tones in this album as well, reflected in many of Leo’s lyrics and song titles, hence the apocalyptic landscape of collapse, fire, and decay. But still punctuated by the contrast of the ever-prevailing light. A true heaven and hell landscape and motif that will never die.

Did you hear the Wings Of Steel music beforehand, and did that have a part in the cover design?

When I started the concept for their EP they sent me their demo which I blasted constantly while drawing for that one. The same went for the full length. this time even more fueled after seeing them deliver such a powerful live performance. Their first ever as Wings of Steel.  It absolutely drove my hand to bring the same fever, melodies and aggression their music does.

Can you tell me a few of your own favorite albums and album covers? bands and album artists you liked? (maybe a short list of each)

Oh boy, this is a tough one. A tough question for anyone who loves music especially with so much easily at our fingertips now.

Let’s start with Tool. One of the first bands that helped me discover music in my formative years of the mid/early 90’s. Still all of them making my list of favorite albums and covers to this day.

Both of these albums have a completely interactive covers or jewel cases. Aenima was like a hologram when you moved it the eyeballs would waver in and out.

The Lateralus cover was composed of like 6 clear pages that you could scroll through to see the individual layers, that when it was fully closed you could see the full image here.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard: Nonagon Infinity, All them Witches: Baker’s Dozen

Any other album covers or projects you’re currently working on and links you’d like to share?

DOKKEN to release new studio album in October

A new Dokken album coming, will be the band’s first in over 10 years. The first single is out, and it sounds good. Don Dokken has gone though a number of health issues, and there’s been many comments about his voice over the last several years, but he sounds fine on “Fugitive”. The guy’s not in his 20s or 30s, but still has that recognizable voice here. Longtime bandmate Jon Levin does an outstanding job on this one. A memorable chorus, big solo, looking forward to hearing the rest of the album. Dokken and Levin are joined by longtime drummer BJ Zampa, and bassist Chris McCarvill (both ex House of Lords). Heaven Comes Down will be available on blue vinyl, CD, and cassette HERE. *For more info check out the new video for “Fugitive” , and read the bio/press info in the details.

CONEY HATCH – Postcard from Germany (a review)

Recorded in 2018, Postcard From Germany was kept in the can for a few years, and is being released this week. It follows the recording & release of Live At The El Mocambo (2020/21). Postcard From Germany was recorded at the HEAT Festival, in Ludwigsburg, consisting of 13 songs. BUT, a few interesting things that make this a ‘must have’ for Coney fans. First, the set-list does differ from the El Mocambo show, with an emphasis on the band’s 3rd album Friction. That album was a big hit over there, so this set includes 5 cuts from it. The show sounds energetic, and the Friction tunes (with Dave Ketchum on drums, who wasn’t on that album), as well as with then-new guitarist Sean Kelly, and minus the keyboards(!) they rock a bit more (IMO). The band’s other albums are all represented, though there’s the glaring omission of “Hey Operator” – which was not performed that night (for whatever reason, really!?). The band gets a nice intro in German (their first time in Germany), and seem to have enjoyed themselves. But this album has the added bonus of including 2 new studio tracks, the first Coney Hatch tunes to feature Sean Kelly, and finished around the time of the El Mocambo show in 2020. “It’s About A Girl” has already been released as a (digital) single and video, a fun pop-rocker from Carl Dixon, with a catchy chorus; a song that could’ve been a major hit … in another time. The other new track features Andy Curran on vocals, “Heaven’s On The Other Side” is a heavier rock tune, the intro reminds me of “Boys Club” (from CH Four), lots of cool guitar throughout this; old school Coney fans will dig this one!

*Find this on Amazon or get the limited signed copies from Cleopatra > https://cleorecs.com/store/shop/coney-hatch-postcard-from-germany-cd/

*There is an Album Release bash/show for Postcard From Germany September 22 at the El Mocambo

Story Behind The Album Cover – RAVEN’s All Hell’s Breaking Loose, with Andrej Bartulović

In this latest post of Story Behind The Album Cover, artist Andrej Bartulović (All Things Rotten) discusses the cover art for the brand new RAVEN album All Hell’s Breaking Loose. Andrej has done numerous album covers for the likes of Mortis, Nocturnal Breed, and the latest from Alcatrazz! Enjoy the read, and check out the links below for more on Andrej Bartulović’s work.

First, can you give me a bit of background on yourself, how you got into art (different media’s) and in particular, album art?

I got into art while I was practically a kid. Got more involved into band stuff in high school and started working for bands around 2000. – the great time of MySpace. Awesome times!

Do you have favorite artists, and particular rock album artists, any favorite album covers (by other artists) from your youth?

Always loved Ed Repka, we all grew up with his covers. But artists I admired were regular metal fanboy list artists, starting with Giger then Cappullo. Grew up with Italian comics, not American. Dylan Dog was my fave comic and for many years Corrado Roi was my fave artist back then. Today I worship Riccardo Federici, an absolute beast and God (for me at least).

You’ve done the latest Raven album (did you happen to do the previous one?)  Can you tell me a bit about your connection to the band?

If you are referring to “Metal City” as the previous one, then no. I didn’t do that. I did their “Leave ’em Bleeding” EP. I started working for the band years before on some shirts. I think Mike Heller just posted on Facebook that he needed artsy/graphic guy and I answered. He checked  my page and I think that’s how it all started, that was years before. Working with Mike since. We toss ideas around, I do sketches, brothers are deciding is it a go or no. They’re all cool guys. I’m honored for a chance to work with them.

What inspired the whole idea and drawing for the All Hell’s Breaking Loose cover? Were there ideas put forth from the band or drawn from the music?

I think the idea came from the album directly, it’s actually all hell’s breaking loose on that record. It’s mayhem of an album (in a good way). Guys wanted madness, monsters, basically Metal City on steroids on steroids on steroids (yes, I wrote that 3 times haha).

Can you detail how you created the artwork for AHBL – techniques, materials,… It is a very detailed piece. Excellent

Thank you for your kind words, appreciated! It was hand drawn on tablet, colored and textured too. There were many changes concerning poses and faces, kinda tricky to pull those out. I used reference photos, of course. Monsters were the easy part haha. Also drew the logo by hand to fit the aesthetics of the cover and get more comic book feel. And yes, would use this opportunity (thank you again) to say loud and not so proud – bass guitar has 2 extra tuning machines. It’s a honest mistake we’ve all overseen. Super weird! But we were busy adding all those laser spiders.  So yeah, shit does happen but I think it doesn’t ruin anything, just adding bit of charm.

Anything else you can tell about this cover, and how well it turned out?

The answer is below the previous answer, basically. But I’m happy how it turned out, guys love it and people seem to dig it too. So it’s win-win-win.

You’ve done a number of other covers, notably the last 2 Alcatrazz albums. What are some of your favorite covers you designed, with a line or 2 about them?

Yes, I did the last 2 Alcatrazz covers, gotta thanks to Giles (for the opportunity and trust) and Silver Lining Music for patience. Some of my faves? Bah, I always think the last thing is the best thing. I’m super critical about stuff I do so I really can’t decide about faves. I like the last Nocturnal Breed stuff I did.

What sort of music do you listen to? And any favorite tracks from the new Raven album?

At this exact moment as I write this I have Dissection playing through the speakers. It’s usually death and black metal, but I also love Arjen Lucassen stuff too… weird heavy stuff like Lost Horizon, Laibach, EMF, ABBA…hahah. Last few years I’m mad about video game soundtracks… nostalgia all the way.
My fave Raven track from the new album would proly be “The Far Side”, but the whole album is absolute batshit crazy and young bands should take some notes.

What other projects are you working on (music related or otherwise)?

Just finished some book cover illustrations; but generally it’s more or less about music – shirt designs, banners, whatever the band needs. But whenever someone needs any art done I’m around, like a sleazy weirdo hiding in the bushes.

MOUNT MARY to release Diamonds Of A Fool

Finnish hard/classic/blues rock band MOUNT MARY has a new single out – ”Color of My Tear” (see new lyric video below), from their upcoming 2nd album Diamonds of a Fool (to be released Aug18th). The band has a very ’70s feel, with big riffs, and strong melodies. Well produced guitar heavy songs, which should appeal to fans of Led Zeppelin, Cactus, Mountain (hey, Corky Laing guests on 3 tracks here!), as well as modern day bands like Rival Sons, Dirty Honey, and The Damn Truth. Maria Hanninen’s vocals remind me (at times) of Sass Jordan. A solid album of 9 rockin’ songs, that doesn’t lighten up much, with fave picks being “Diamonds Of A Fool”, “Tohu Bohu” (I like the Hammond organ here), and “Heart’s Astray”. *For more info, credits, and links – see below!

CCR Tribute album coming from Ripple Music.

US Heavy rock label Ripple Music is releasing a massive CCR tribute set. Check out the first single from it below. ‘Bone Church’ has done an awesome heavy and up to date rendition of the classic “Fortunate Son”, with a fitting video to go with (see it below!). This thing will include over 30 covers. Love the artwork!

Ripple Music announces a December release for their Creedence Clearwater Revival tribute album “Burn on the Bayou”, featuring 32 bands of the Californian heavy label’s roster. Listen to the first single with a rocking rendition of “Fortunate Son” by US stoner metallers Bone Church now!

Set for a December 3rd release, “Burn on the Bayou: A Heavy Underground Tribute to Creedence Clearwater Revival” will be released in 3xLP format for a total of 29 songs and 3 bonus tracks. The album features covers by Ripple Music bands JPT Scare Band, War Cloud, KIND, Great Electric Quest, High Priestess, Kabbalah, Stonebirds, Thunder Horse, Void Vator, Cities of Mars, Kyle Shutt (The Sword) and many more.

About the compilation, Ripple Music label founder Todd Severin says: “I chose Creedence Clearwater Revival for our first compilation because I wanted to do something different. I didn’t want to do Sabbath, Lizzy or such because bands have such reverence for them that they would turn in their best take on Sabbath or Lizzy.  I wanted a band with amazing songs, that the bands could make their own, and boy did they.  Plus Creedence Clearwater Revival is rooted in the sludge of the swamp, an aesthetic that plays well to stoner/doom bands. And to really bring out the swamp in the songs, the whole project was mastered by Kent Stump of the legendary swamp rockers Wo Fat.”

Bone Church guitarist Dan Sefcik adds: “As soon as Todd asked who would be interested in a CCR tribute record we jumped on it and immediately said we’d do “Fortunate Son.” Not only is it one of my favorite songs of all time, but the message is as poignant and powerful as it’s ever been. The corrupt political and corporate “elite” deceiving the masses, forcing them to give their lives in furtherance of their twisted agenda, with no regard for humanity. We see it repeated over and over again and it’s as relevant now as ever. We recorded the song on June 28th, 2021 at Dirt Floor Studios here in CT. We wanted to stay true to the original track, because frankly it’s perfect, but we also wanted to expand on it. That’s why we wrote a second piece that continues the story and further focuses on the soldiers who were thrown into the hell that is war. Most importantly we’d like to dedicate the song to all the soldiers and their families who sacrificed their bodies and minds. You will not be forgotten.”

“Burn on the Bayou: A Heavy Underground Tribute to Creedence Clearwater Revival” was compiled and produced by Todd Severin. Mastered by Kent Stump at Clear Clear Sound, Dallas, Texas. The artwork was illustrated by Cody Kuehl, with layout by Mack Aceves and gatefold art by Joe Mruk at Red Buffalo Illustration.

Prepare yourself for a metal rampage the likes of which you haven’t enjoyed in many a year as New Wave of British Heavy Metal stalwarts RAVEN deliver the electric mayhem of All Hell’s Breaking Loose, their 15th studio album, released June 30th on Silver Lining Music.

The Newcastle pioneers, formed by the Gallagher brothers (bassist/vocalist John and guitarist Mark) and rounded out by drummer extraordinaire Mike Heller have emerged from Heller’s own Heaven And Heller Studios in Los Angeles with 10 crisp, visceral metal classics, each fused with riffs, twists, turns, chaos and more hooks than all the Hellraiser movies combined (think hyperbole, ‘turn-it-UP’ and find out for yourself)!

Among the stand-outs are lead single “Go For The Gold”, with the redline pushed hard by a cavalcade of riffs and furious, percussive madness, yet behind it all a melodic journey that makes it multi-dimensional skull-crushing.

“‘Go For The Gold’” is our first single as it really represents the new album mission statement… 100% full on RAVEN lunacy!!!!”,  enthuses John Gallagher. “If you’ve got an initial great riff, you just build from it,… you try not to milk it to death. You want a good structure. You want a good verse with hooks, a good pre-chorus with hooks, a great chorus, and then you want little left turns here and there to spice it up. Otherwise it can sound boring. And if you have too many left turns then it turns into jazz fusion, so it’s a funny line you gotta dance on to have structure but also the chaos part as well.”

Title track “All Hell’s Breaking Loose” twists and turns with accents and flavours buried inside the chaos. “Lyrically the song is about the constrictions of being locked down during the pandemic and the desire and need to ‘break free’ from it all or risking going insane…” explains co-founding member and guitarist Mark Gallagher. “It’s about taking control of your freedom!” Mark exclaims. Meanwhile “Surf The Tsunami” sees  Heller gatecrash your eardrums with a furious flurry of his own, before some supreme twister riffs bring on the full metal chaos; “Turn Of The Screw” bounces on the upbeats before smashing you with a thunderous chorus; “The Far Side” has as classic a metal riff as you’ll hear in 2023; “Desperate Measures” is pure ’81-saturated tales of hardship and despair, if you ever wondered what RAVEN at the Marquee were like on a sweaty metal night in ’83; “Edge of A Nightmare” is your portal to paradise, thundering as hard as the opener “Medieval”.

What RAVEN have delivered with All Hell’s Breaking Loose is permission for everyone to remember exactly what it’s like to lose yourself in the healing aural waters of supreme heavy metal music, resplendent in sweat-soaked denim and leather.

“You got three guys with very strong, passionate, opinions,” offers Mark, “and when those are brought together, it’s a case of ‘iron sharpens iron.’”

“We’re very hard on ourselves,” adds John, “it had to be ‘all killer, no filler’. Absolutely every single part of every song had to make sense, had to mean something, and had to be there for a purpose.”

And All Hell’s Breaking Loose makes it clear that RAVEN aren’t messing around in that regard.

ROZARIO – Norwegian band issues debut single

ROZARIO is the new Norwegian band, fronted by singer David Rosario. The Norwegian Melodic Heavy Metal band will release their debut album on Pride & Joy MusicTo The Gods We Swear on October 22nd, with 3 singles to come before then (the first one is out now!). Produced by Trond Holter (Wig Wam, Dream Police, Holter, Jorn), the album will be released on CD, LP and digitally.

Check out the band’s debut single/video to the song “To The Gods We Swear”. A memorable opening riff, a massive guitar sound, with great lead and big backing vocals. Love the production of this. An excellent song, and a huge sound. Looking forward to the rest of the album!

“This is our first single out and with this song, we salute Norse mythology…maybe not in it’s correct form, but we wish to highlight the greatness and courage that the Vikings stood for. In other words, this is a tribute to the history of Norway and the Norwegian people. Enjoy this salute to the greatest of them all ; Odin and Thor and their conquest for victory.”

Rozario might just be one of the most exiting new bands on the exploding new Norwegian metal scene, and the debut album can be expected later this year. This album is definitely a monster you want to be attacked by. The upcoming album consists of 11 songs that will dig into your soul…and stay there. – *Pre-order the album Here

About the band: David Rosario was looking for someone to record some of his songs with. David had been impressed with guitarist Stein Hjertholm and drummer Per-Helge Bruvoll after seeing several gigs with their band, so he reached out to them. The three of them recorded a 3 song demo, and during this process, the chemistry between them was eminent and the idea of Rozario was born. This was just prior to the pandemic and naturally all activity became very restricted. They used their time wisely and focused on song-writing and finding the direction of the band, with songwriting contributions from all three.
Rozario then teamed up with producer Trond Holter (Wig Wam, Holter, Jorn etc.) and started to record what would become “To The Gods We Swear” in his studio in Halden, Norway.
During the recordings of this release, the lineup of the band was finalized when young guitar virtuoso Johan Jamtfall & bassist Anders Halsan Engum joined them.

ELOY – legendary German progressive band release new video and album

Legendary German prog band ELOY has a new album out – Echoes From The Past. The band, from Hanover, formed in 1969 and is lead by founder/guitarist/vocalist/songwriter & producer Frank Bornemann. Also on board is bass player Klaus-Peter Matziol, who joined Eloy in the mid-’70s, drummer Stephan Emig (who played on the previous album), as well a number of backing singers, and keyboard players – most notably Steve Mann (MSG, Sweet), who’s been on a number of Eloy albums since the mid ’90s. Echoes From The Past is Eloy’s 20th studio album and is a follow up to the band’s previous 2 releases – The Vision, The Sword, and The Pyre (Parts 1 & 2), which are based on the same story (see below).

The new album’s stunning artwork was once again created by Michael Narten, who has done many covers for Eloy, as well as Scorpions and Trumvirat, Eloy has also released a single/video for the song “Fate” (check it out below). Echoes From The Past comes in multiple formats and multiple colored vinyl issues.

Eloy’s debut album was released in 1971, produced by the legendary Conny Plank. Eloy (the album), was a harder guitar driven album, more in tune with the likes of Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, and Lucifer’s Friend. But the band would turn towards a much more progressive sound and approach, ala Pink Floyd, releasing such classic albums as Dawn (1976), Ocean (1977), and Silent Cries And Mighty Echoes (1979). The latter could be easily mistaken for a lost Pink Floyd album upon first hearing. During this era Eloy also featured former Scorpions’ drummer Jurgen Rosenthal, and keyboard player Detlev Schmidtchen (who would go on to release a pile of solo albums in the 2000s). Eloy’s ’70s output is some of the most essential progressive rock out there, though harder to come by over here as very few of these albums got issued in North America.

From press release: “The album is the conclusion of a three-part album production on the theme of “Joan of Arc”, and a very spectacular video is also presented for the title “FATE”, which illustrates the whole story of the French heroine from the Middle Ages, who was crowned a saint, in an astonishing 3 minutes with rhythmic force and a rolling beat, as well as a tremendous choral refrain. After the first two albums entitled “The Vision, The Sword & The Pyre (Part 1 & 2)” already brought great success, as well as reaching high chart quotations, “Echoes from the Past” could even surpass this, because on this album the band sounds even more the way their worldwide fan community likes them most. The typical Eloy spirit of sensitive, atmospheric sound waves alternating with powerful, pulsating rhythms rules this album, literally jumping at the listener with every note.

AVI ROSENFELD & ANDRE TULIPANO – Battle Of Rock

For his latest project, Israeli guitarist/songwriter/producer Avi Rosenfeld teams up with singer Andre Tulipano from Brazilian band STEEL WARRIOR. Battle Of Rock is a good rock album, with a number of stand out cuts, heavy on guitar, and fine vocals – with Tulipano being from that Rainbow/Purple influenced school (ala Dio, Doogie White, and a bit closer to Ronnie Romero, IMO).

“Raven” leads of this 10 track album. It has a soft yet atmospheric intro before the band kicks in along with a big scream. This is the best track here, has a NWOBHM feel, and Andre Tulipano’s strong vocals suit this perfectly, making a pretty powerful sound. Other standouts include the rocker “Send Down The Angels”, with a bit of an ’80s Deep Purple feel, and cool Hammond solo courtesy of Colombian player Victor Hugo Santafe Ossa, as well as the faster paced “It’s Hot”, featuring British Hammond player Nick Foley. “Burn The Light” is highlighted by Finnish guitarist Timo Tolkki (ex Stratovarious). There’s a lot of players here, pretty amazing how Rosenfeld pulls together so many different musicians from various parts of the world. Battle Of Rock is well worth checking out, and can be purchased digitally or in a very limited vinyl edition Here.
